Cleopatra is said to have committed suicide because the thought of life without Anthony was intolerable for her. King Edward VIII gave up the throne of England to be able to marry the woman he loved, Walis Simpson, an American divorcee and therefore ineligible to become queen. We delight in reading about or watching the crazy, fantastic, magnificent things people have done in the name of love. When we try and conjure up figures from the past, we tend first of all to solve the mystery of what or more importantly who they loved.
Did Queen Elizabeth really whisper the name of Robert Dudley, her alleged lover as she lay on her death bed? Who is the “dark lady” to whom Shakespeare addressed his sonnets, the most magnificent outpouring of love the world has ever witnessed? Closer home, until Saif confirmed that he and Kareena were indeed in love with each other, there was a frenzy of speculation. Perhaps our obsession with knowing who the object of that person’s affection is stems from a deeply held belief, that it only in loves someone or even something that the inner most part of a self is revealed.
So, once we know what or who you love, we feel that we know you definitely. That we have glimpsed your essential self. Because the choices made in love reflect the deepest desire of one’s heart and soul.
If I were pressed to say why I loved him,
I feel that my only reply could be:
‘Because it was he, because it was I’.
