In a rain-affected match on Thursday, when Chennai Super Kings took on the fight with Punjab XI, Mathew Hyden unleashed his fiery batting display to the utmost entertainment of the crowd and scored 89 valuable runs to reach a big total of 185/5, in the reduced play of 18 overs. Despite the loss of opener S. Badrinath for a golden duck in the first ball, both Hyden and M.S.

Dhoni (56 not out) propelled their team to a very good total. Hyden’s knock of 89 came in 58 balls, studded with 6 sixes and 8 fours; Suresh Raina hit 32 runs in 20 balls with 4 fours and 1 six; and M.S. Dhoni swashed his bat to get an unbeaten 56 in 27 balls, with 7 fours and 2 sixes, having elected to bat first after winning the toss. Chasing such a huge total, Punjab Kings XI equally responded and showed the strength in their batting order. Opener Sunny Sohal fell for 2 runs, but the other Opener Simon Katich went on with a beautiful performance of 50 runs in 25 balls, before got dismissed by L.

Balaji. Yuvaraj Singh (58 not out) and Mahela Jayawardane (44 not out) pushed the score-board speedily, helped by the failures of fielders in making funny errors of missing simple catches, slipping run out chances with fumbles to the maximum. Both of them would have made it – they reached a total of 174/3 – but it was little bit too much, when it mattered in the final overs. Hyden was rewarded Man of the Match for his stroke play.

05-05-09: If each of the batsmen play to his true potential the total goes up automatically. This is what was proved in today’s encounter of Rajasthan Royals against Punjab Kings XI. Fine display with the bat by Openers Greame Smith (77 runs in 44 balls – 12 fours and 1 six); Naman Ohja (68 runs in 51 balls – 5 sixes and 4 fours); Ravindra Jadeja (33 runs in 12 balls – 5 fours and 1 six); Lee Carseldine not out for 16 in 9 balls was enough to put up the highest total of 211/4 in this IPL Game 2009 so far. Yusuf Pathan, who the team has been depending upon for their wins, made only 12 runs this time, but in 7 balls with 1 four and 1 six. The platform for hitting big was well laid by Greame Smith and Ohja, who made 135 runs within 15 overs.

Earlier Punjab Kings XI won the toss and put Rajasthan Royals to bat first. After their bowlers bungled with the ball in gifting lot of runs, the chase by Punjab Kings XI started disastrously. Opener Sohal edged the first ball to Shane Warne to take the catch at first slip and even before the Innings began there was a duck. From then on it was a parade of batsmen to the pavilion one by one – Karan Goel (1); Simon Katich (10); Kumar Sangakkara (11) and Mahela Jayawardane (9) to face deep trouble with 53/5 at 10 overs. Yuvaraj Singh fought a losing battle with 48 in 37 balls before falling to Amit Singh. The team could thus gather only 133/8.

Greame Smith for his fine knock with the bat was rewarded Man of the Match.

01-05-09: The new Captain Anil Kumble for Royal Challengers, after Kevin Pietersen went back to England, has some luck to start with a win in the second version of IPL Games. He manipulated the situation with clever bowling changes, to down the opponent team’s batsmen one by one. He himself removed the dangerous Yuvaraj Singh, Captain of Punjab Kings XI, after the opener was brisk in accumulating 50 runs to score first wicket partnership of 70 without loss. After Yuvaraj sent two sixes in Kumble’s bowling, fell for a ball hit not so fast, to be caught by Jacques Kallis. Kumar Sangakkara (17), Mahela Jayawardane (19) and Irfan Pathan (12) failed to stick on to reach the target of 146 and ended miserably at 137/7.

Earlier Bangalore Royal Challengers won the toss and elected to bat. Yusuf Abdulla claimed 4 wickets and Irfan Pathan 2 wickets. Yuvaraj Singh performed the very first Hat-trick of IPL Games today, when he eliminated Robin Uttappa, Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher in the last two balls of 11th over and the first ball of 12th over. However batsmen like RD Merwe (35), Kallis (27), Uttappa (19) and Virat Kohli (16) contributed well to sustain the Innings to reach a competitive total of 145/9.

Yuvaraj Singh was the Man of the Match for his Hat-trick and 50 runs.

But the turn of events proved otherwise on Sunday.

Punjab Kings XI won the toss and elected to bat. Openers Karan Goel and Ravi Bopara did not expect that even before the Innings started, Goel will be run out unfortunately at the non-striker’s end. Kamran Singh was the bowler. Captain Yuvaraj Singh flicked to a catch behind with 2 runs. With Bopara packing off with 11 runs the score was 38/3. However Sankakara (60) and Irfan Pathan (39) steadied the Innings to score a reasonable total of 139/6.

Chasing 140 Rajasthan Royals opened with Asnodkar and Greame Smith. Wickets fell like a pack of cards by batsmen scoring in single digits. Bowler Abdulla struck the blow with 3 wickets and Irfan Pathan 2 wickets. The efforts of Jadeja (41) and Captain Shane Warne by a bold 34 not out did not yield fruit. At the end of the 20th over, they were able to score only 112/7 and defeated by Punjab XI by 27 runs.

Kumar Sankakara for his highest score was adjudged the Man of the Match. Punjab Kings XI posted their second victory in 4 matches.
