Sometime it’s the things you don’t say that are the most important.

As people spend more time together, even years, they can easily take each other for granted, and perhaps neglect those special moments that were so carefully chosen when they first began seeing each other.

If you believe that you have started to take your partner or friends for granted, there are many things you can do to reinvigorate those special times, and it doesn’t have to be the things you say.  For many people giving something extra thought can make all the difference, actions are often remembered way beyond a few words.  Here are a few suggestions:

1.  Post a note.  If you have ever found a little note left for you, often in an unusual place, then it comes as a real surprise.  You know that whilst you were out, or busy doing something, your partner was busy thinking of you.  Leave them a note on the kettle or the bedroom mirror…we’ve all heard of children writing ditties with the fridge magnets, try it for yourself, it will be appreciated.

2.  Hugs mean a lot.  The physical affection of a hug can go a long way to saying so many words of affection, without uttering a sound.  We should all have been on the receiving end of an unexpected hug, and you will remember how nice it felt, just to be hugged.

3.  Poems are romance.  It doesn’t matter if you aren’t the Poet Laureate; it really is the thought that counts.  Write a few well thought through lines that come from the heart.  Lyrics that are corny may have the opposite effect so it may be wise to avoid standard lines about roses being red and violets blue… just be genuine.

4. Surprise them with a present.  Presents don’t have to big and expensive, they are always best received if they have been given thought rather than just had money thrown at them.  A surprise gift is always well received and is an equal joy for the giver, so buy a small bunch of flowers or a box of chocolates just to show you care.

5.  Household chores.  Romantic gestures don’t always have to involve carpeting the floor in fresh rose petals.  If your partner always does the washing up then surprise them by doing it yourself for once, without being prompted.  If they come home to find you vacuuming the living room they will be in a better mood instantly.  Make their day better by doing a small thing yourself.

6.  Take their hand.  How many times have you walked down the High Street doing some shopping and you could as well be two good friends, and not life time partners.  Gently take their hand, it will instantly make them feel loved and appreciated; to know that you want everyone else to know that you are together.  It requires no effort, no cost, just a tiny little thought, and it will go a long way.

7.  Cook them a meal.  Especially if your partner does all the cooking, they will be so happy to have you make a meal for them.  If you are feeling adventurous, or are already a talent in the kitchen then go the extra mile and make a special meal, but in fairness, if your partner has a dinner prepared for them they will be so grateful.  Just make sure you don’t destroy the kitchen in the process!

8.  Look good.  When you first met you were both so aware of how you looked when you were going to meet the other person; you spent time choosing your clothes, brushing your hair and perhaps even putting on some smelly aftershave or perfume.  How many times a week do you do it now?  Don’t worry if the answer is hardly ever, you are not alone.  Once again, making that special effort will almost never go unnoticed, and will always be appreciated.

9.  Massage.  After a hard day at work, everyone wants to settle down in the evening with a hot cup of coffee or tea and relax.  That relaxation is made so much the more enjoyable if an unexpected back or shoulder rub comes out of nowhere.  You just know that your partner wants to do everything they can to relax you and make you happy, and once again, the best thing is that it doesn’t cost a penny; it is only a thoughtful romantic action.

10.  Listen.  Often quoted as one of the greatest skill in life, we are all guilty of just nodding and carrying on watching the TV or reading the book.  To feel ignored is to feel lonely, but to be truly listened to makes you feel valued, wanted and loved.  Listening needs practice and is something we can all get better at.  Once thing is for sure, if you listen carefully, it will be truly appreciated.
