Same film in a theatre for 14 years – a Guinness Record

Sharuk and Kajol

Sharukh and Kajol

Indians are movie lovers no question. Otherwise how will you describe a same and similar film (the print must have worn out and renewed often times it seems) running continuously for 14 long years since its release? Truly such a bizarre show is conducted daily as a Matinee (Noon show) at “Maratha Mandhir” theatre at Mumbai. The film that has won the hearts of couples is “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (meaning “those with hearts will take their fiancé”) in which the Indian super-duper hero Sharukhan has played the lead role.

The film casting Sharukhan with two heroines Kajol and Mandhra Bedi (the cricket compeering fame) was released 14 years ago on a Diwali day and was a run-away success all over India. The theatre owners must have judged its popularity among teens and loving couples (both married and not) and so they are running the show in their Matinee every day.

Minimum Ticket is Rs.18 and Balcony is Rs.22. So couples celebrating their wedding anniversary have nothing to do – other than coming to this show (with a pop-corn pack for Rs.10 to munch). Seeing the film is not the only reason – there are others like talking for hours together sweet-nothings.

“I have lost count how many times I have seen the movie, but I like it very much” – comments like this about the movie are quite common at Mumbai. On weekdays the theatre is fairly crowded by lovers, who come inside the darkness of the theatre to stage their romance. But on week-ends the theatre is full because this Sharukhan movie is fantastic. With this Diwali it is running for the 730 weeks and more since its release. Still it pulls youngsters like bees to honey.
