Rann: Movie Review 2010
Director: Ram Gopal Varma
Cast: Amitabh Bachchhan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Gul Panag, Neetu Chandra, Mohnish Behl
Ram Gopal Varma returns to real world brand of cinema with movie Rann. Based on “breaking news” syndrome that seems to have overtaken certain sections of media. And Ramu’s earlier movies like Satya, Sarkar and Company re- visited India’s underworld through is semi –realism lens of cinematography. Rann trying to rips off the mask off honest reportage from the TRP obsessed television media, that has fallen to present any news – fantasy, mythological, folk, and false too. This film simply reiterates some thing we already knew. But the presentation and story narration is very good. Rann scores in the way of story telling, thriller like and testy. More importantly, it’s the performance that pumps life and blood into the characters you recognize. The legend Vijay Harshwardhan who leads the good channel is an icon. He wants to stick by the truth alone, despite the falling viewer interest.
Ram Gopal Varma not only manages to grab eyeballs from the beginning to end with his taut narration, he orchestrates a veritable treat when it comes to performance from his ensemble cast. Leading the pack is Amitabh Bachchan, lending gravities with his restrained portrayal as the media chief. Vetran Paresh Rawal also revels in creating the picture of true evil. But there are smaller players who walks away with your applause suddep, Rajat Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh, Mohnish Bahl all are very good in there role.
Vijay Harshvardhan Malik (Amitabh) is the founder of India’s first private news channel. Things change when his rival Amrish Kakkar (Mohnish) launches a channel that delivers baseless entertainment and starts ruling in terms of viewer ship. Vijay’s son uses every trick in the trade to get his dad’s channel back to the top slot… Yes Rann’s a riveting experience!!!
