Movie Review – Jail
A film from the camp of Madhur Bhandarkar, who gave heart-rending stories of Chandni Bar; Corporate; Traffic Signal and Fashion and gained an extensive fan base. The film at the outset may not pull women-folk and kids very fond of lighter entertainment, with its heavy theme and its story revolving around a prison.
The background taken for telling the pathetic story of the hero – as expected an easy going lad, enjoying life with his fiancé – to be arrested and sent to Jail is somewhat heavy. The field where most of the scenes of this movie are being enacted namely – the prison – is totally unfamiliar to many. They may not relish undergoing these woes and to this effect this movie “Jail” serves the social purpose.
Parag Dixit (fantastic performance by Neil Nitish Mukesh) is the innocent lad who encounters worst problems in life because his friend is a drug peddler and for no fault of him, he is implicated in a case. He undergoes the drudgery of prison life for two years, thanks to the ordeal of legal process in the Courts; inmates of prison with different backgrounds; the condition of prison; the dark cell into which he is put – enough to make a man go nuts.
But how Parag overcomes all these with determination to see the light of the day, and wins from depression and hopelessness is rest of the story. Nawab (Manoj Bajpai) the butcher is the only jail friend, who believes Parag to be innocent and supports him.
The characters are real-life – corrupt lawyers; palm-greasing cops; distressed poor family members not able to meet the lawyer’s fees; jail officer venting about poor salary and monotonous working hours etc. and move the audience.
Overall the film is good in story telling, but it is a moot point whether it will hit the box office.
