Large Cast Powers “He’s Just Not That into You”
Based on a 2004 book by the same name, He’s Just Not That Into You is a largely ensemble-driven comedy that follows the romantic ups and downs of a group of “romantically-challenged” youngish (20s and 30s) adults whose dating goals fall into two camps: Serial dating with no expectation of a monogamous relationship in the future; or dating with the purpose of finding that one, special mate. Can you guess which sex seems to be perennially disappointed with this arrangement?
He’s Just Not That into You sports a large, diverse cast, including Justin Long (of “Live Free or Die Hard” fame), Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, and Drew Barrymore, in addition to the talents of Ginnifer Goodwin, from HBO’s Big Love, and around whom much of this film’s plot revolves. Paired up with Justin Long, who portrays Alex — a serially promiscuous friend of Goodwin’s character, Gigi – we get a look at Goodwin’s misadventures in the dating world, and how she’s unable to correctly interpret the signals given off by the men she dates, to much humorous effect on some occasions.
Other characters the movie invests time in showing that sometimes, a date is just a date and not something more meaningful, also find themselves caught in typical 21st century relationship complications; things like “Do I continue dating him while he’s still married to his wife?” for example. And if there’s a bittersweet part to the movie, it’s in the relationship between Beth and Neil (Aniston and Affleck), who’ve had a steady, 7 year-long affair.
He’s Just Not That into You is good Saturday night date-fare. Not too heavy, not too light, and perfect for those who understand a date may just be a date, and not a proposal of marriage.
