When you see a pregnant lady, all that you can see is her rotund belly and a few added pounds everywhere. But there’s more to it than meets the eye. Here’s what goes on in a woman’s body through each month of pregnancy.

Month 1

In all likelihood, women may not show or feel symptoms. However, some women feel incredibly sleepy. Breasts might become tender and slightly larger by the fourth week. A heightened sense of smell is also one symptom. Women might notice that aromas that were hitherto pleasant cause nausea. Your favourite foods’ smell might seem repulsive.

Month 2

You might put on a little weight around the hips. A tiny bump may form around the stomach and the waistline may increase. However, there might not be any noticeable weight gain. The umbilical cord is forming and can be tiring. The texture of hair and skin change. By the end of the second month, the level progesterone and estrogen hormone in the body are real four times the normal level. Leading to major mood swings as also food cravings and aversions.

Month 3

A lot of blood is being pumped through the body, which means that the heart has to work doubly harder which also means that your energy levels might be at an all time low during this phase.

Month 4

Generally women tend to feel much better in the second trimester than they din in their first. However, since each person is different so is the body’s reaction. The thin line of fine hair than runs from the navel to the pubic bone becomes darker due to hormonal changes. Pain in the abdominal muscles is normal because it stretches to accommodate the baby growing inside you.

Month 5

The mother has adjusted to the hormonal changes in the body by now. She can feel the baby moving. However, an increase in the volume of blood can make the mother feel light-headed. Women must avoid resting on their backs. The skin of your belly is stretching. This might lead to tightening and itching. Use a good moisturizer with vitamin E to moisturize your skin and supple.

Month 6

The areola (dark circles around the nipples) will get larger and darker. Breasts grow larger consistently. It is likely that colostrum (a yellowish liquid) might ooze from the breasts. The Montgomery glands (li’l elevated areas around areola) will become enlarged. Blood pressure might drop in the second trimester but will return to normalcy in the third.

Month 7

As the baby grows bigger, the digestive tract, lungs and liver are pushed upward. This might lead to bouts of indigestion or constipation as well as breathlessness which is uncomfortable. Watch what you eat. You will also feel the urge to pee more often because of the pressure on your urinary tract.

Month 8

There will be a strain on your back and you may not be able to sleep properly because of the need to pee often. This could make you snappish. Try to remain calm. Hands and feet might swell.

Month 9

Braxton Hicks or false alarms occur regularly in this month. As the baby has grown to its full size by now, the stomach, liver, lungs, pelvic bowl are all cramped up against the diaphragm. This might be uncomfortable.

Pregnancy can be overwhelming because of the changes in one’s body. However, the key is to be calm and composed.

Influenza is a highly infectious respiratory disease. It is caused by the ‘influenza’ virus. Several types and two sub-types of type A (H1N1 and H3N2) and type B circulate in the air. Influenza is transmitted through the air by a person suffering from flu, coughing or sneezing, creating droplets containing the virus. Complications from influenza can kill and it is estimated that tens of thousands of people die in India every year from Influenza.

The typical symptoms of Influenza are fever, cold and cough, body ache, headache, fatigue, weakness and sometimes loose motion and vomiting. Often these symptoms are confused with common cold which is a trivial illness compared to influenza, which is a systemic illness, often leading to complications.

Prevention

As the influenza virus is air-borne, the patient should avoid attending work. He should cover the nose ad mouth while sneezing and coughing. Use of hand sanitizers, hand washing and proper disposal of mask is also important.

The only way to prevent influenza is to get vaccinated against the virus. This is an annual vaccine as the protection/immunity developed by the vaccination no longer protects the ndividual once the virus mutates and changes its genetic characteristic every year.

Treatment

Influenza, most of the times, is a self-limiting illness. Adequate rest, good nutrition, treatment of symptoms like fever and cold by simple medicines like paracetamol. However its complications like pneumonia and secondary bacterial infections can be deadly. Taking the annual vaccine in the only way to prevent influenza.

According to a research, ten to thirty percent of women are having HSSD (Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder) or female ‘libido’ problem. Women with HSSD have low sexual desire which is sometimes a major problem in their sexual relationship. Finally, an ‘instant cure’ for HSSD is found and named Flibanserin. Flibanserin is a drug specialized in enhancing female libido.

Actually Flibanserin has not released yet to the public. The United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is still working on it because the drug has serious side effects despite of its useful function. The side effects of Flibanserin are insomnia (sleeping problem), nausea (vomiting), and headache. The FDA is actually responsible for public health and Flibanserin is actually cannot be released. But who knows? Since the HSSD women are really in need of the drug and do not seem to mind the side effects. However, as always, it is the HSSD women who need to decide whether the side effects worth compare to the benefits.

There are many controversial responses from the public following the Flibanserin announcement. Some people say that HSSD is actually normal and do not need risky drug to treat. Others agree that it is not reasonable to add diseases into healthy body. And some also suggest other solutions outside Flibanserin, such as a sensitive massage, wine, Kama Sutra tips, etc.. Having all these responses, the Flibanserin inventor can only say that the drug has been improved and those side effects may not seriously occur.

Flibanserin is a very expensive drug. If FDA finally agrees the release, then it will gain 2 million dollars profit only from US market alone. Whatever the FDA’s decision is, do you or do you not vote for Flibanserin?

People living near good green parks, avail good transport facility, get fruits and vegetable easily – run lesser risk of diabetes by 38% – say American scientists. Ami Axenclass of Drexel University, Philadelphia gave details as follows:
Healthy environment and hygienic habits are the foremost out of all factors in controlling diabetes. In this regard, a study was conducted among persons in the age group of 45 to 84 – numbering 2,285 individuals. Details with respect to their blood sugar count, physical exercise activities, weight, food habits, living environment, facility for getting healthy food items, walking exercises and where they take up such walking bouts etc. were collected for analysis.
Out of the above persons, it was found out, the chances of getting diabetes risk was reduced by 38% for those – living near green parks; have good transportation facility nearby; facility to get fruits. vegetables and such other healthy food items easily.
Meanwhile, one of the health magazines of US has reported the result of a case study in which students of a school, where the junk-food shop is nearby, eat less quantity of fruits and vegetables. The intake of aerated water is also highly prevalent among these students. Because of such activities, the students of this particular school are more obese than the students of other schools.
Often times it has been the repeated advice by the medical fraternity, to avoid junk fast foods and aerated carbon-di-oxide mixed drinks like soda, if you want to avoid the most feared ailments – obesity and diabetes. Now living in a residential place surrounded by green parks is also recommended to farm part of healthy habits!

The pandemic of swine flu caused by H1N1 virus has taken its first toll in Massachusetts, according to health officials of Boston. A 30 year old woman of Boston perished of the swine flue on Sunday, which has already claimed 45 lives nationwide.

The unfortunate woman was young and had all the fitting demographics found on worst-hit victims. Health officials are of the opinion that the women’s medical conditions existed otherwise, would have caused complications of the virus infection leading to death.

Disease specialists at the Boston Public Health Commission were unable to provide the identity of the woman, owing to patient confidentiality laws, but said the woman was gravely ill on arrival at the Boston hospital on 5th June, immediately taken to intensive-care unit, but died inspite of best efforts on Sunday. The hospital was identified as Boston Medical Center and the woman has one child, as per information gathered from officials requesting anonymity.

The executive director of the health agency said as per preliminary review of the patient, the woman should have sought hospital care previously. City disease trackers have taken investigation of the matter, whether the woman had some other problems of health, which made her acutely susceptible to complications of the HI1N1 virus, which is the scientific name of swine flue.
Alerts were sent throughout the city yesterday morning about the case, and till late night there was not much progress in collecting the facts behind. No clue could be found by city officials about where the woman worked – hospital, school, or a doctor’s office etc. – prospective places for catching the virus.

John Auerbach, the Massachusetts public health commissioner, commented that the fatality is a reminder as how swine flu can be very serious and also expects there would be other people seriously affected with H1N1 virus and they would also, sadly, die.

Statistics show that Boston recorded 441 cases confirmed of swine flu virus infection from late April and out of them 54 patients should have spent one night atleast in some hospital. All over the State, cases definitely identified for swine flu through laboratory testing are 1,153, of which 80 resulted in hospitalization.

However these figures are only showing a small fraction from the total cases stricken by the disease, from its first appearance on the State about six weeks back. In respect of most people infected by the virus, the symptoms are similar to the seasonal flu such as fever, cough, pains and aches, without any serious side effects and most of the cases did not follow a visit to the doctor.

Because of this, disease specialists painstakingly cautioned the public, at the same time not to create panic, to be more vigilant about the symptoms of the flu.
The executive director of the city health agency, Barbara Ferrer, assured that a majority cases of infection by H1N1 flu virus are only mild cases and they could fully recover from the disease, and expressed grief over the fatality occurred today.

It is surprising the disease detectives, as to why the Northeastern United States especially has been hit hard by the H1N1 virus. As many as 16 deaths have been reported in New York City alone last week.

Dr. Anita Barry, director of the Infectious Disease Bureau at the Boston Public Heath Commission informed that compared to other parts of the US country, Boston is witnessing enormous amount of H1N1 virus activity and the reasons are not clear. Comparatively the numbers at Boston are quite high than anywhere else, except New York City. This is baffling the officials, among several mysteries that are being investigated into swine flu pandemic, originally migrated from Mexico and spreading rapidly to other countries in the world.

The swine flu virus is mysteriously attacking children and younger adults disproportionately, sparing largely the older people, and specialists are trying to find out the clue. Three out of four confirmed cases of H1N1 virus infection in Massachusetts are people aged 25 and younger. With the result, schools hundreds in numbers have closed temporarily, since the virus moves deadly fast.

In the case of usual seasonal flue, mostly elderly people are prone to complications, and an estimated 36000 US citizens are killed every year by it.

Dr. Thomas Frieden, former New York City health commissioner and presently director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regretted that the H1N1 virus seems to be spreading faster with school going children and that is the unfortunate news we have never accustomed to. And the good news on this sorry state of affairs is lots of elders have been spared.

This virus is most troublesome for people suffering with other complications like asthma, kidney disease, diabetes, serious cardiovascular conditions etc. Actually a review of such cases by disease specialists in New York City shows, that over 80 percent of hospitalization cases of swine-flue victims with these complications, have been prime targets for the virus.

In this background, the medical history of the fatality case of 30 year old Boston woman gets importance in the investigation by the officials. It is to be found that whether she had serious complications underlying already, as in the case of other victims showing a pattern or some new fact will come to the floor by her death.

The answers to these doubts will enable physicians like Dr. Lauren Smith, medical director of the state Department of Public Health, determine in crafting their message to the public at large. Dr. Smith asserts that the virus infection has been going on for some time now, to cause fatigue on vigilance tactics and the medical fraternity is walking a fine line side-by-side reminding people that it is relatively only mild illness, not to get panicked. At the same time, she cautioned that people who already have underlying illnesses, should immediately talk to their physician, in case they develop symptoms of H1N1 swine flu infection.

Health officials in New York City said on Friday that the cases of new H1N1 flu virus started declining in the city, which is worst hit by the pandemic virus of all the cities earlier.

But Mayor Michael Bloomberg expressed concerns that school children are prone to this virus, as carriers to the playgrounds in July and August, during the holidays.

The statistics are New York turned out highest rate of swine flue cases – three more deaths reported on Friday, taking the total to 16 deaths and 567 hospitalization – as United States has 1,000 hospitalizations with HIN1 cases, to become the country most affected overall.

Dr. Thomas Farley, New York City Health Commissioner, expressed in a statement his concern about every hospitalization with the flu virus and deaths causing tragedy. However he was complacent that the surveillance data indicates declining trend of new cases of infection.

Meanwhile, a declaration by The World Health Organization released on Thursday, on a full pandemic of H1N1 virus infection, says after confirmation that the illness by the virus is spreading out of control in Australia as well, along with North America. Although according to WHO the virus is only “moderate”, US health officials project that the virus-infection has caused havoc on hundreds of thousands of people.

Back-history of the swine flu virus is it was identified in two US children first in April, a bunch of cases associated with one School in New York and then spread all over the New York city, which has more than 8 million people. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statement on Thursday, the highest activity of H1N1 flu virus is observed at States of New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

So far the CDC has 17,855 confirmed cases of H1N1 virus and 45 deaths reported, but apprehended that the actual numbers of affected cases will be far higher, since most of the patients are not either tested or many cases with the virus would not have visited doctors.

Mayor Bloomberg commented that New York also witnessed a surge of cases worried-well – people with fear of the infection and disease, contacting emergency rooms and clinics, when there is no basis for their fears. The Mayor went on a weekly radio show to assuage people, with the good news that the worried-well are fewer now with number of hospital visits being down and the numbers of kids seeking help from the school nurses with symptoms of fever are also less.

Last month the CDC officials were of the view that flu season ends usually in April, but the past outbreaks of instances of flu virus have been associated with activities of kids in summer, in the summer camps. Mayor Bloomberg apprehends this may be the case in New York this year. He said that kids congregate in summer in many and different ways and the danger is high during summer, since kids from different locations get together during this season.

The holidays for public schools will begin on 27th June in New York City.

WHO and CDS officials anticipate that H1N1 virus activity will reduce during the hot summer in North America, but at the same time caution about the unpredictable nature of these viruses. It is also note worthy that people below 45 years will be affected by this virus, just like similar H1N1 viruses and other flu viruses.

In the case of other pandemic viruses they begin with mild epidemics in spring season, but cause serious diseases when cool weather returns months later.

.

The first death in the State was a man in his 30s with not-so sound heart conditions, who succumbed to the virus when attacked, defying treatment last week, as per Washington State health officials.

The affected cases with this swine flu appear to be mild though as in seasonal flue, the strain has killed 48 people in Mexico, one in Canada, three in U.S. and one in Costa Rica where confirmed deaths have been reported.

Health officials apprehend that this swine flu has moved southwards, where the season is beginning for influenza disease. Chances are this virus could get mixed up with seasonal flu viruses already circulating or the virus of H5N1 avian influenza and create possible new strains.

Bloomberg News reported that the American Association for Cancer Research meeting included recent research revealing presence of high levels of 2 chemicals in smokers’ urine which correlate with their chances of suffering from lung cancer. As compared to subjects with lower levels of the two chemicals, those with high levels of the byproducts of tobacco smoke had 8.5 times the risk of developing lung cancer. General public does not have access to this test till now, with researchers estimating the time needed to make it commercially available to be at least three to five years.
Improving overall health is best done through total quitting of smoking.

2. Milk: Complete Health Care for Women?

Motivated by several advertisements promoting milk as the best way to alleviate PMS symptoms, bring back shine to dull hair, and make women happier, U.S. News’s Katherine Hobson takes a deeper look into the science of milk and its advantages, separating fact from myths. For instance, some women may benefit from calcium and vitamin D for eliminating PMS symptoms. That doesn’t mean it’s a pice of cake, as claimed by the advertisements. Women who include milk as part of their daily diet must choose low-fat or skim varieties. One study has concluded that higher rate of PMS may be associated with intake of whole milk.

3. No COBRA Assistance for Retrenched Employees of Small Companies

In recent times, the economic stimulus package introduced in February included a COBRA subsidy that gives 65 percent of COBRA premiums, for nine months, to employees laid off during the time period of September 2008 and end of this year. The important point here is that the subsidy applies to workers laid off from firms with 20 or more workers only. Those who do not fall in that category are left to rely on state laws to know whether they are eligible for the subsidy or not.

The HIV virus attacks your immune system, rendering you vulnerable to the multitude of germs that we all face on a daily basis. Normally a person in relatively good health would not even be aware of this danger as their body would fight of the lesser infections without them even knowing it. But a person with advanced HIV is very vulnerable to the risk of infection and disease. An illness such as tuberculosis (TB) is opportunistic and attacks at the first sign of weakness. Alarmingly, the number of patients with both of these diseases has grown dramatically and there is now a new fight on the hands of doctors worldwide, with calls to find a drug that could treat both diseases at the same time.

Sadly governments in most countries still view the diseases separately. The South African government is a prime example of this, where the country witnesses hundreds of deaths due to the combination of these conditions on a daily basis and yet for some reason refuses to acknowledge that a change in strategy is needed. This is the same in a number of countries throughout Sub Saharan Africa where the situation is at its worst.

The World Health Organisation has stated that more effort needs to be pushed towards the identification of co-infection in patients. There is simply not enough being done to stem the tide of this disease. To make the problem even graver is that the fact that there is now a strain of drug resistant TB which renders doctors unable to treat the patient. Combine this with the scary thought of HIV and it is clear that there is now a major crisis at hand.

Stakeholders in this matter have turned to the Prime Minister of the UK to step up and say something. It is clear that only if developed nations take the lead in recognizing that these two diseases have to be treated hand in hand, will developing nations follow suit. It is not clear if the Prime Minister will mention the situation at the next meeting of the G20 but what is clear is that if something is not done soon, the situation is going to go from crisis to epidemic. This is not something that we can afford to let happen.
