Aloo Chat – Review
Aloo Chaat fails to tickle the taste buds
Aloo Chat is the name given to an Indian delicacy made up of sweet and sour potatoes that are tossed in spices. If made properly it is so good it will have you coming back for more and this was certainly the hope of movie producers when they decided to name one of India’s latest releases by the same name.
The story revolves around a young man just returned from the United States who has got a fiancé that he is seen in town with. But this is all just a sham because he is really in love with a girl called Aamna. Although he knows that this is the true love of his life, he is very worried that his parents won’t accept her because of her religion.
The couple design a plot to win the hearts of his parents. They ask a girl to pose as Aamna who does all the wrong things like wearing bikinis and not doing any cooking. Then they have the real Aamna pretend to be her friend while she does the cooking and behaves as the perfect Indian bride should. They hope that she will become popular with the parents in this way. There are a number of characters with which the audience can fall in love and even two aloo chaat vendors who arrive at important moments in the movie.
But the entire movie is confusing with too many characters and leaves one with a bad taste in their mouth – definitely not what aloo chaat does normally. While there are moments of illumination, this movie is best reserved for a stay at home movie night, preferably one where you do not feel like thinking as it does treat the audience as simpletons at times.
